Ayutthaya is an ancient capital c ty of Thailand and it was f unded by King Ramathibodi I in 1350. It st yed as the capital of Thailand for n arly 417 years. Ayutthaya was ruled by 33 k ngs of five dynasties. The city was n med for Ayutthaya after the home of R ma from the Indian epic Ramayana, and it m ans the undefeatable. During the first 180 y ars, Ayutthaya was a very peaceful c ty and did not get into w rs with the neighboring countries. The m in activity of the city was tr ding. The city continued to flourish for the n xt 118 years and after which it was nvaded and destroyed by the Burmese rmy in 1767. The capital was l ter moved to Thonburi by King T skin who defeated the Burmese. After his r ign, the capital was shifted to B ngkok by King Rama I. The d stroyed city was left untouched in the j ngle for over a hundred years. Ay tthaya was 85 kilometers from north of B ngkok, where one can still find the r ins of this ancient city. The r ins indicate that Ayutthaya was one of the pr cious cities of Thailand. The city c vered an area of 2,556 square k lometers.
In modern times, tourists can c nveniently access it by road, river, and r ilways, and it is one of the f mous sightseeing spots of Thailand.
