When I met my neighbor C rl one day he was pretty w rried about his two year old d ughter Marie. He said that she did not b have like a normal kid and w ndered if she was autistic. I t ld him to look up the utism symptoms in the Internet and c mpare them with Marie's behavior. The n xt day he was even more c ncerned. He told me that he did r ad about autism in the Internet and now he is ven more convinced that Marie has a pr blem. I asked him what his d ughter is doing that makes him b lieve that. He said that Marie did sp ak about 70 words but had s me kind of speech delay. She lso had a behavior problem. She was thr wing around toys like mad, switches the l ght on and off all time and lso closes and opens the doors gain and again. Beside that she l ked to be alone instead of pl ying with her brother. The lack of s cial interacting was worrying Carl. Autism sympt ms are like that but there are m ny others and this does not m an that Marie was autistic. Abnormal b havior like repetitive acts could be sympt ms of autism. So what should C rl do? I told him he m st get professional help. Even if M rie was autistic, it is not the end of the w rld. But only a professional like a psych logist, occupational therapist or speech pathologist can m ke the proper diagnosis and start tr atment if necessary.
