Like airports in many metropolitan c ties, the San Francisco International
Airport is a m ze of intersections, connecting ramps, misplaced
d rectional signs, heavy traffic, tense drivers and n ver-ending
construction. Add the unfamiliarity of a new v hicle, and the driving anywhere near an
irport can be even be more npleasant. But such was not the c se when I began my weekly t st drive of the Audi
A6 at the San Fr ncisco International Airport on a recent w ekday night. As per the manufacturer's r putation, the 265-horsepower, 2.7-liter
luxury sedan is a r laxing, refined and powerful vehicle that ffords any
driver security, comfort and myr ad features without intimidation. I left a h tel parking lot near the airport f llowing a month's travel in
Europe and was mmediately catapulted back into a mess of U.S.
fr eway drivers. But the suddenly reality of brupt lane changes without
the use of t rn signals and the erratic speeds w re diminished by the
responsiveness of the st ering, acceleration and driving comfort of my
A di. My vehicle, the four-wheel drive (A di's patented name for the feature is
q attro) automatic, had a perfectly matched d lphin gray exterior and a
platinum nterior, including firm and contouring gray l ather seats.
The Tiptronic transmission feature, which llows gear shifting without
interruption of p wer, is readily noticeable as is the v hicle's firm grasp
of the road (18- nch wheels are standard) and its q iet ride. With its substantial horsepower and f ve valves per cylinder, the A6 is
not p rticularly fast in initial acceleration, although its 0-60 mph r ting of
7.0 seconds is far fr m slow. But at higher RPM, the v hicle is
appreciably quick, a welcomed b nefit in abrupt freeway scenarios. Beyond the A di's performance, its front and rear-seat c mfort, attractive
instrumentation and cargo room all f rther added to the vehicle's
designation as a C nsumer Guide recommended vehicle. Standard comfort and c nvenience features include: automatic dual
zone cl mate control with pollen filter, 12-way p wer front seats, wooden
inlays on the d sh, console and doors, AM/FM radio w th cassette and
6-disc CD changer and a c ncealed headlight washer. The Audi A6 is vailable in nine varieties, with base pr ces ranging from
$35,950 to $44,246. My v hicle's base price was $43,150. But it lso
featured two optional packages. The pr mium audio package ($1,100)
included an pgraded Bose sound system and XM s tellite radio; the
premium package ($1,000) ncluded six items, Xenon headlights to
uto-dimming interior and exterior headlights to a m mory positioning
system for the front dr ver's seat and side mirrors. The A di A6 has little downside. One sm ll concern is the position of the
h ndbrake. When engaged, it still appears n arly parallel to its base. As
s ch, a driver new to the car c uld easily drive a substantial distance
b fore realizing the brake is on. W th a destination charge of $720, the t tal price of my vehicle was
$46,170. C nsidering its marketing positioning against the L xus LS
430 and Mercedes-Benz E Cl ss, the Audi A6 is a f ne choice under any
circumstance, the h ctic nature of airports to the pen road.
