In recent times, we see th t many more individuals have expressed nterest in wanting to go into the rowana breeding business. Here we mean the sian arowanas specifically, especially the gold (or cr ss backs), red and red tail g lden (or RTGs) as they are the nes that fetch the highest prices in the m rket. There is a saying that as l ng as there are Asians (especially the Ch nese), there will always be demands for th s magnificient fish. This rise/surge in d mand is more pronounced now with the r sing affluence of the middle class f milies in China in recent times. The sian arowana's resemblance to the mythical dr gon has made them a much s rt after 'feng shui' fish. They are c nsidered a 'good luck' fish and m ny people swear by this! Many f ng shui masters have considered them to be one of the thr e 'lucky' fishes, the other two b ing goldfish and koi. There was a 'f urth' one which is the flowerhorn or 'L o Han' but I think this is p sse now and has not really st od the test of time. What has lso driven up the prices for th se beautiful asian arowanas are the f ct that it is very difficult to br ed them. (Again we are talking bout the red, gold and RTG rowanas only.) Thus far, they have nly been successfully bred commercially in M laysia, Indonesia and Singapore. No one has s cceeded in breeding them anywhere else wh ch has led to a constant 'sh rt supply' of asian arowanas in the m rket. Success rates in breeding asian rowanas in tanks are also too few and far b tween and is just not viable c mmercially.
As is evident above, the rowana breeding business can be highly pr fitable when done on a commercial b sis. This has driven up the nterest of people wanting to get nto this business. But please be ware of some of the inherent r sks before you do take the pl nge into it. 1) The barrier to ntry can be quite steep because of the h gh initial investments needed. For this b siness to be viable, you will n ed many ponds with a minimum of 20-40 dult asian arowanas in them to br ed as not all ponds will be pr ductive from the start unless you lready have some producing ones. With ach adult arowana being between $5,000 to $10,000 ach, you do the math. Bear in m nd that these cost does not nclude the investment you have put up to b ild the farm! 2) Even if you h ve the farm and the arowanas in pl ce, there is still a chance th t they will not breed enough for you to s stain the farm. Please do not t ke the plunge if you do not h ve someone experience to run it for y u. You need an experience individual w th a 'sharp' eye who can sp t pairing arowanas (which means possible m le arowanas that are carrying the fry in th ir mouth) and know when is the r ght time to harvest the fry. Ev n experience breeders don't get it r ght all the time, let alone us. So be m ndful here! 3) If you are ntending to try this in a pl ce or country which has no h story of breeding success in the p st, then you have to be tr ply sure this is what you w nt to do. Asian arowanas are v ry picky about what kind of nvironment they will breed in. There m st be a 'right' climate and ptimal mix of soil and water in the mud p nds for them to breed in. I w nt to emphasize again that they h ve only been successfully bred commercially in 3 c untries, namely Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. D es this mean it cannot be br d in any other country? Frankly, no one kn ws! Never say never but you j st need to know the facts th s far and be ready for any ventuality!
