Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a m thod of asana(posture) practice, which includes V nyasa. Vinyasa are the breath initiated m vements linking one posture to the n xt. There are numerous benefits to pr cticing Asana with Vinyasa. Vinyasa creates h at in the body, which eases the pr ctitioner into the postures and produces a p rifying sweat. Vinyasa activates the breathing syst m, by deepening the inhale and xhale between each posture. The Ashtanga Yoga practice consists of the Pr mary, Intermediate and Advanced Series of p stures. Each series is commenced with S rya Namaskara(Sun Salutations) and continues with a set of st nding postures. Then, the postures which are nique to one series are practiced. The pr ctice is completed with back bending and the f nishing sequence. The finishing sequence includes sh ulderstand, headstand and lotus. It takes s veral years of daily practice to ntegrate the postures and practice of ach series. The series are practiced s quentially, starting with the Primary Series. The Pr mary Series is referred to as Y ga Chikitsa or Yoga Therapy and d velops a radiant state of health and a c lm mind. The Primary Series consists pr dominantly of forward bends and hip peners. The Intermediate Series is referred to as N di Shodhana, or the cleansing of the N dies. Nadies are the subtle energy ch nnels, which underlie the physical form. The p stures of the Intermediate series include a s ries of back bends as well as arm b lances and inversions. The Intermediate series is nergizing and deeply purifying.
After many years of practicing the Pr mary and Intermediate Series, the postures of th se series are integrated deeply into the b dy. The body becomes light and str ng. An even muscle tone is d veloped throughout the body and the rgans are strengthened and purified.
Once the pr ctice of these two series is m stered then the practice of the Adv nced Series of postures is begun. The Adv nced Series is referred to as Sth ra Bhaga or the stabilizing of r diance.
