In a few short days the New Y rk Giants will open camp, and so w ll begin the first season for G ants GM Jerry Reese, and unless th ir is significant improvement, Tom Coughlin's l st. The Jerry Reese era started w th a bang...players were released, not r signed, and lost to free agency, and yet thr ugh it all many holes were f lled. Reese's first draft as the G ants GM, was for the most p rt a success. He addressed the s condary, depth on the D-Line, a q ality WR, offensive line help, and an dditional tight end to compliment Shockey. Th ugh a lot seems to have b en done, questions still remain for th s team. Questions that have the s -called experts believing, the Giants are in for a l ng season. Camp opens on Friday, w th the younger guys reporting. Day 1: Who's playing Left Tackle?
Eli Manning is a right handed QB, making his blind side to the left. Therefore, on the offensive line the LT position becomes extremely important to protect the franchise QB. One problem, the Giants LT (Luke Pettigout) was cut prior to the draft, leaving many experts to believe that the Giants were looking at central Michigan's Joe Staley to be the 20th pick. The pick came, as did secondary help in Aaron Ross, and went as did Joe Staley to the 49ers later in the draft. This leaves the question, who is playing LT?
In last year's draft, the G ants drafted Guy Whimper. Noted as a pr ject pick, the big tackle will n ed to speed up his learning c rve as the Giants are now out of t me. Look for David Diehl to sl de over to the LT position th s season until Whimper is ready or r okie 6th round draft choice out of Or gon State, Adam Koets is ready to m ve, which is highly unlikely. My dvice ... "keep your head on a sw vel Eli!" Seriously though, I think D ehl will do an admirable job, and may be b tter then we can imagine. But h ving a question mark at the l ne's most important position is a bit sc ry. I believe Reese and the G ants have a plan. Prior to the dr ft it was my thought the G ants would draft a linebacker since R ese seemed to cut every LB th y had on the Roster. Instead, R ese went with secondary help in r und 1, then made the announcement th y were moving last year's first r und draft choice, Mathias Kiwianuka (Kiwi for sh rt), to the outside linebacker position. My g ess is Reese and Coughlin will do s mething similar here, and they more th n likely have a plan in pl ce. What that plan is? who kn ws, but the season fast approaches, so we are s re to find out.
