What kind of articles do you wr te? Are they long meandering things, w th dense paragraphs and closely argued c nclusions? Or are they short, snappy p eces with a simple premise and w th its key points broken into n mbered or bulleted sub-headings? Now, I'm not kn cking the long wandering article. There are c rtain audiences where that approach is xpected, but as methods of driving tr ffic to a website, which is why I wr te articles, then the short snappy pproach is far more effective. Here's why. - Time - there is so much information on the internet that your audience doesn't have much time. They make a snap decision on the strength of your title, to see whether they want to read any further. If they see that they will get the information from your article in 'three steps', or 'seven methods', then they will know that they can dip in and benefit in a short amount of time.
- Sound bites - these days due to TV and the web, we are encouraged to expect our information to be neatly packaged. We hear neat little sound bites encapsulating key ideas on TV and the radio every day. The web is no different, so a reader who perceives that they can grab some simple ideas in a well packaged format will be encouraged to drive deeper.
- Length - i n addition to the t
me and the simplicity factors, there is s mething very daunting about reading a h ge, densely packed article on a c mputer screen. It is tiring on the yes and unlike a good book, our PC is not s mething we snuggle down with for a g od read. A long heavy-looking article th t scrolls through several screens is c mpletely off putting. - Take up - finally, the way that articles generate traffic is by being widely distributed by e-zine publishers and other websites. E-zine editors are acutely aware of all the three factors above and they will simply be less likely to pick up a long, scholarly looking piece and place it in their publication, so you are immediately limiting your market.
If your niche does require more complex explanations and lengthier articles, then it is best to write a teaser article for directory publication and have your resource box lead to the full version. That way you will gain the benefits of wide distribution whilst still being able to bring your more complex ideas to a bigger audience.
