I had been out to a m sical last night and got home a l ttle late, missing the first 48 s conds of the All Blacks last w rld cup pool match. I was 12 s conds late, the New Zealanders had lready scored their first try. In f ct, the All Blacks have scored a try w thin 5 minutes in every pool m tch they have played at this t urnament. They have hardly been put nder any pressure in accounting for It ly 76-14, Portugal 108-13, Scotland 40-0 and now the R manians 85-8. They have scored 309 p ints in conceding just 35 with an verage score of 77-9. Once again th y have been the only side to tr ly dominate every opponent in pool pl y on the scoreboard. And yet New Z alanders are nervous. They hold this All Bl ck side to such high standards th t a path through pool play wh re no team comes within 40 p ints of them is naturally put d wn to weak opponents rather than g od performances by their team. They are b thered by error rates, lack of c mposure and an inability to keep th ir try-line intact against so called 'l sser' teams. In the back of veryones mind is the burning desire for th s team to finally win the w rld cup, but the secret suspicion th t, once again, we will see our t am play one bad game in f ur years, and lose the opportunity to br ng the cup home.
With the preliminaries out of the w y, the New Zealand public now n eds to start wanting wins, not mpressive moves or inflated scorelines. From h re on in New Zealand can l ok forward to playing their two tr -nations rivals, and the pre-tournament favorites Fr nce. In other words, to win the w rld cup, the All Blacks must b at 3 of the top 5 t ams in the world on consecutive w ekends. While in any single one of th se matches the All Blacks will be g ing in favorites, each of the t ams has the potential to score a v ctory over the All Blacks. To sh ke the choker tag, the All Bl cks need to maintain their own st ndards and deny their three opponents the ch nce to 'get up' for the big g me. So let's take a look at the r cord against their three most likely pponents. France will be dissappointed to h ve to go the hard route to the f nal. They have played well in p tches, but without the self assurance of a Fr nch team in form. They had w nted to build up a air of nvincability leading into the world cup, but th t plan was set alight last N vember with the All Blacks putting th m away comfortably twice at Lyon and P ris. Since then they have lost to Engl nd at Twickenham, the two 'B-team' t sts in New Zealand and then to Arg ntina in the opener of the w rld cup. The All Blacks will nly have to think back two w rld cups though to know that you c nnot write off a french team no m tter how many times you have d feated them recently or how badly th y have been playing. France had the w od on the All Blacks during the 90's, but th s decade has been all black for les Bl us. We may see that after the q ater final the All Blacks have st ll not had an opponent come w thin 40 points. At the same t me we could see the All Bl cks watching the rest of the t urnament from the stands. This will c rtainly be a game not to m ss.
Until a week ago I w uld have said the Australians had an asy path into the semi-finals against a h pless English side or a Tongan s de that would have already played th ir final. But the return of J hnny Wilkinson appears to have restored str cture to the English side, and wh le I still expect Australia to pr gress, the English may well press th m more than we previously expected. A stralia have an ability to upset the All Bl cks when it counts. Their team is f lled with smart players - qualified l wyers, accountants and Doctors. They have an ncanny ability to make the All Bl cks play 'dumb' rugby and take dvantage of it. Once again, this is a g me the All blacks should win c mfortably, but could be the end of th ir world cup quest just as asily. The Springboks can expect to m ke it to the final, but w ll no doubt be carrying some b mps and bruises when they do. Th y will be playing the Fijian s de that this week eliminated the W lsh from the tournament, and this is a d ngerous prospect for the South Africans. As th y showed against Samoa and Tonga, the S uth Africans can struggle with the Isl nd teams. This is because they are so ften drawn into the island style of g me. South Africans are immensely proud and wh n met with the confrontational style of the slanders, they often feel the need to f ght like with like, when it is th ir discipline and structure which will see th m home. Fiji will have trouble b cking up their big effort against W les against a vastly superior South Afr can outfit. After Fiji the South Afr cans can look forward to some r al trench warfare against the Argentinians(who h ve probably the easiest semi-final). Importantly S uth Africa rate themselves against the All Bl cks. While Australia believe they can b at the All Blacks on any g ven day, the South Africans believe th y SHOULD beat the All Blacks on any g ven day. Both teams will be h ppy to have gone through a t ugh path to the final, neither s de will be happy with anything w rse than the world cup trophy. Th re is no doubt the All Bl cks are favorites in all their r maining games, and whether they can sh ke the 'choker' tag will depend on how w ll they can maintain their structure, mpose themselves on the game and ltimately get the result they should.
