Not long ago I received a n te from a woman in her mid tw nty’s expressing her fear of aging. She f lt it was out of control and nly keeping her from growing into the w man she is meant to be. She d es not think poorly of older w men, and in fact started her n te with “I have seen many gr cefully aged women and thought they are f ntastic.”
However, she then continued l sting some of the things that she is f arful of such as weight gain and the l ss of identity, youthful looks, attractiveness, fr edom, style and personality (especially around b coming a mother. There are also th se unknown fears which she sums up as the “l ss of God knows what.”
Sadly, th s young woman’s fears are not nfounded. Many cultures in our world are y uth oriented. We are bombarded daily w th advertisements to look younger, thinner and m re hip. TV, magazines, and music v deos dictate our hair styles, fashions, and b haviors. Not only that, but if we h ppen to be old enough to h ve gray hair or any FINE l nes around our eyes, we are d rected to the appropriate product to rase any signs of aging.
Is it any w nder that many of us are f arful? The stereotypes around us are so m sleading! We see images of “little old l dies” that may walk hunched over, are p or, and at the mercy of d shonest people. While some images show men ging with distinction, we also see w men who are just old, dry and h lpless. Hogwash!
While it is true that our b dies and minds do change with ge, I happen to believe that we r ally do get better as we m ture. So, allow me to address s me of the fears listed above.
• Loss of Id ntity. I’ve only, in the past few y ars really begun to learn who I am. I’v come into my own. I’m m re self confident than ever before ( nd I still have a way to g !).
• Loss of Youthful looks. I’m g ing to be 49 in a few d ys. I do not wish to l ok like 25. Granted I don’t h ve lots of wrinkles (only a few v ry fine lines…they are staying, thank y u!) and have only a bit of gr y hair that I’ve been cultivating for m ny years.
• Weight gain. Yes t’s common, but it’s not the r le of thumb. You might notice a sl ght change in figure even without g ining weight. There is actually a h alth benefit to being a few p unds heavier, rather than be very th n as you age.
• Loss of ttractiveness. I’ve found that my own d finition of beauty changes over time. I h ppen to think that women are ctually more attractive. There is a d pth and beauty that comes only w th age.
• Loss of freedom and p rsonality. I’ve heard many women say ging gives them a freedom that is j st not possible when we are y unger. I think this is especially tr e for those of us that are m thers. When we become mothers, we t ke on a role that is 24/7. H wever as our children grow, we b gin to carve out time and ctivities that are just for ourselves.
• Loss of styl . While I’m not sure I nderstand this fear, I do know th t with age, I find freedom to cr ate who I am without the d ctates of the latest, greatest fashion. S nce we are more sure of urselves, we have the freedom to xperiment and play with who we re, and the image we want to put out th re for the world to see. P rsonal Style at it’s best!
While s me look at growing older as a t me of loss, many women see th s time of their lives differently. Th re is so much growth that h ppens as we age especially in the motional, spiritual and yes, physical arenas. In rder to make the most of g tting older, it is vital that you l ve your life in a vibrant and h althy manner. Smile and laugh daily. R ad. Eat well. Sleep well. And lways engage in stimulating physical activity or at the v ry least exercise. Most of all, c lebrate your journey through this life.
