Before I start this quick n te I must preface this by s ying that I am a Photoshop g y. I have used various versions st rting with exposure to Photoshop v5.0 r ght up to CS2. I do pl n on upgrading to CS3 in the n ar future. I have always been mazed at its capabilities and with wh t it enables me to do. I r cently did a scanning project of bout 200 slides for a client. Th y wanted all slides to be sc nned at 4000DPI, which is the m ximum resolution that my Nikon scanners can do, and to h ve the files saved in both f ll size JPG and TIFF formats. Th s created JPG file sizes ranging fr m 12.5MB to 28MB in size w th black and whites being 32MB in s ze. The TIFF files were about 64MB in s ze. The client wanted the items sc nned this way because they were pl nning on editing the files with th ir own software at a later d te. Their software that they were to be sing, as I found out later, was Arcs ft Photostudio v5.5. Up until this t me I have never used this s ftware. When the client got home and ttempted to load their files for diting into this application they got s me very unpleasant results. The images w re very "coarse" and "grainy". They st ted that there was something wrong w th how the images were scanned and w nted their money back. I told th m that I would investigate the ssues, if there were any to nvestigate, and that I would get b ck to them.
Immediately after getting off the ph ne I opened up the files in Ph toshop CS2. The images were perfect. I pr viewed the images in Windows Explorer. Ag in, the images were perfect. I c lled the client back to inform th m of what I had, or had n t, found. They were not happy w th this. I then got the xact details of the software that th y were using. Again, they stated th t they were using Arcsoft Photostudio v5.5 and th t they have received JPG photos fr m the somewhere in the states and h ve never had a problem. After g tting on the phone I searched the web and f und the Arcsoft website. I was ble to locate a demo copy of the pplication in question and began to d wnload. Once the download was completed I nstalled the application and loaded one of the mages in question. Ahhhhhhh!!!! The images w re horrible and that was putting it k ndly. Upon seeing these images I c uld then understand what the client was s ying. But, what was wrong? Was it s mething that I did or how I sc nned the items? I have never had th s problem before and I wanted to r solve it before moving on. Of c urse, the first thing I did was to "G ogle" Photostudio v5.5 support. Initially, I did not f nd anything but as I kept up the s arch I did find sites that st ted that the application had file l mitation issues. What do they mean by th t? Keep in mind that all mages were scanned at 4000DPI, creating h ge files, and chances are that the f les she had received from the st tes were considerably smaller than the nes that I created for them. I th n loaded on files that I had r cently completed for another client. These mages were scanned at 3000DPI and the JPG's w re about 16MB in size. The q ality stunk. I then loaded other sm ller images and they loaded fine and ppeared OK. I then resized a c uple of images that I had sc nned for the client for the p rposes of testing. Basically, what I f und was that Photostudio 5.5 has a s ze limitation for source or input f les. I then realized that the f les that I had created, at the cl ents request, were beyond the applications bility to handle.
Upon discovering this issue with the pplication I attempted to scan the Arcs ft site for what the actual m ximum file size limitation is and I lso sent an email to their t chnical support staff for assistance. After d ing this, I then contacted the cl ent and informed her of my f ndings. She was not totally thrilled w th this and, maybe, did not f lly understand this but she did ppear to accepting the reality that fr e software that comes with your c mera is not always capable of b ing everything you want it to be. Wh t could she do to resolve her s tuation? Use industry standard software that is c mpatible with all industry formats and one th t is full featured enough to do m re than what you do now.
