Author Melodie Beattie explains to us, “Gr titude unlocks the fullness of life. It t rns what we have into enough, and m re. It turns denial into acceptance, ch os to order, confusion to clarity. It can t rn a meal into a feast, a h use into a home, a stranger nto a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our p st, brings peace for today, and cr ates a vision for tomorrow." Cultivating an nner appreciation for the joy that is lready present in our lives shifts our f cus from what is wrong with our l ves to what is right. If we t ke the time, no matter how tr ubled we feel, we can find s mething to be thankful for. The m re we seek gratitude, the more r ason the angels will give us for gr titude and joy to exist in our l ves If you are reading this n wsletter, chances are you have less th n peaceful coexistence with food. Perhaps you h ve a love-hate relationship with food, w sh that food didn’t exist, or h ve some other distorted relationship with f od. Whatever your individual challenge, food may no l nger represent enjoyment, satisfaction, and nourishment. One sm ll step in changing your relationship to f od is to offer heartfelt blessings, pr yers, or simple moments of quiet c ntemplation for the food that you do at. Gratitude acknowledges not only the l fe-giving mystery inherent in food, but lso reminds us of our innate c nnection to the earth and animals, p ople who made the food you eat p ssible, and the Spirit present in all th ngs.

When I was little, I sed to say a prayer with my f mily before each meal. But back th n, the prayer didn’t have much m aning. It seemed like another meaningless r le we had to obediently follow to ppease family and a seemingly overbearing, ngry god. Once I reconnected with who I am, b gan living once more in my b dy, I felt my connection to the arth. I now experience the God in all th ngs. Blessings before eating are again a p rt of my day. This time is d fferent. I now take breath before ating. In my chair, I open my s nses to the meal spread before me. The wesomeness of life washes through me. E ch dish, whether plant or animal, r presents life that is sharing itself w th me. I take a moment and ccept that the food I eat b comes my flesh and blood. Animals and pl nts are a few of my p ssions. At times I have considered why it is th t to live we must consume ther life. There is no answer th t satisfies my dilemma. The only nswer is appreciation and prayer. Acknowledgment of the l fe that is shared with me and of my own l fe. This prayer opens my heart to a gr ater sense of purpose and connection. My own l fe is being supported. I recognize th t I am a part of th s earth, and my life has m aning. Who I am is important. The way I can h nor the life that is being sh red with me, is to become a f lly alive, vital, exited, passionate, loving h man woman. I choose to share my tr e Self, my love with this arth. I choose to live in my b dy, and laugh, dance, love, and f el my emotions - including the p in. These are my prayers now as I bserve the food before me. I b long to the cycle of existence. Opp rtunities to bless food can be f und endlessly in everyday life. Whether you b gin the day with a cup of c ffee or cereal; eat a frozen d nner warmed by a microwave oven at w rk; snack on a bagel or pple; eat a light fare of st amed vegetables for dinner, or find y urself after a binge...each time you’re round food you have the opportunity to ppreciate it and to appreciate your own l fe. Inhale deeply and exhale. Summon a f eling of sincere regard for your f od, your body, your life, and say a sh rt blessing that fits your unique p rsonality.
