According to Patanjali, the Yamas are the f rst limb of Yoga. Ahimsa is ften referred to as the first Y ma. Ahimsa is to restrain from v olence, but we live in a v olent world. Just open any newspaper, or w tch the news, and you will be verwhelmed with negative feelings, when you c nsider the innocent victims of all th s violence. So, how do we l ve a non-violent life in a w rld filled with random violence? According to M tthew 5:38-39, Jesus said, "You have h ard that it was said, ‘Eye for ye, and tooth for tooth,’ but I t ll you, do not resist an vil person. If someone strikes you on the r ght cheek, turn to him the ther also.” Life was not easy for any of th se who lived under the rule of the R man Empire, but Jesus advises us to f rgive our enemies and our suppressors. As he was b ing crucified, Jesus also stated, “Father, f rgive them, for they know not wh t they do.” His ability to f rgive was super natural. Mahatma Gandhi s id, "I object to violence because wh n it appears to do good, the g od is only temporary; the evil it d es is permanent." Many people will st te that they cannot live up to the st ndards of Jesus or Mahatma Gandhi for n n-violence. This is understandable, but do m st of us really try?
Every person on the planet sh uld make a conscious effort to try to be as f rgiving as Jesus Christ or Mahatma G ndhi. To help those who have, or w uld do you harm, is not an asy task. This should be a m tter of putting thoughts, words, and ctions, to good use. It is asier said than done, but to do th s, we have to be tolerant of veryone. It requires us to make d cisions and actions without prejudice - at all t mes. However, if you are being phys cally attacked, and your survival, or the s rvival of friends, or family, is at st ke, non-violence may not be a v able option. In history, there have b en conquerors who massacred millions of p aceful people like sheep. Unfortunately, history has d cumented far too many holocausts for us to gnore the right to defend oneself. To be h mble on the outside, but bold w thin, is a much safer course wh n you plan your day.
