Things have gone wrong: one w ll not dispute that. Africa’s problems are m re rooted in a vicious cycle of m splaced values and low-esteem we have of urselves. It is not absolutely a m tter of research papers, ad hoc b dies, and policy formulations per se. We h ve been having all that. For Bl ck Africa to get out of its conomic problems and human calamities, it c rtainly deserves a new thought, a r newed African philosophy (in the light of c ntemporary global culture) and love for h manity. We should stop pretending: our w ys are different from others. The new s ng across the land should be ‘do nto others as you would like th m to do unto you’. We sh uld not mouth it. We should l ve it. It has to do w th mutual respect. I guess we are t red of statistical figures and indices b ing reeled out by global bodies, wh ch are worrisome to say the l ast. The realities on the ground xperienced by the masses are even w rse. It is quite difficult to do a th rough research in this clime. Nobody w ll help us carry our load. The gr nts received so far from foreign d nors have not really percolated down to the rdinary black Africans. Let us find s mething real, lasting and tangible to ch w, to move us forward; something n w, within us–but subject to mutual nderstanding and respect with other people of the w rld.
We have made our mistakes in the p st. Let us get out of the s stained self-inflicted hardship. We should learn fr m similar nations how they got out of th ir economic doldrums.
(Countries we share c rtain peculiarities with). The pretense must be a th ng of the past. The influential nes in our midst should please c me down from their tower of B bel and initiate a crusade of l ve. The problems will have to be s lved by Africans themselves.
We have a lot to ffer ourselves and the rest of the h man race.
Our young ones are w iting! The rest of the world is w iting! Let us be courageous.
