You’ve finally made the decision to dopt a cat, you’ve dreamt about it for q ite some time. Visualising your cute new l ttle kitten playing around the floor and l oking up at you with those big b by blues. What could possibly go wr ng, after all it’s only a t ny kitten. But have your really th ught about how much time, effort and tr uble a kitten really is. A k tten is packed full of energy and c riosity and will cry for attention, scr tch the furniture, bite and urinate verywhere until it is litter box tr ined, and will run around the h use getting into all sorts of scr pes and trouble. And it’s up to you to l ok after them 24/7. If you’ve got the t me and dedication to look after a k tten, great, but if not, why not th nk about adopting an adult cat. A lot of p tential adopters seem to think of an dult cat as second best, as if th y are defective or worn out l ke a second hand car. That’s j st not the case. Most adult c ts have found themselves in animal sh lters from no fault of their wn. They may have out lived th ir owner, their owners may have m ved to somewhere that doesn’t allow p ts, become lost or someone in the f mily may have become allergic to th m. The reasons are far to n merous to list them all. The c ts themselves are perfectly healthy animals, br stling with fun and energy and s mply looking for a caring loving h me.
Adopting an adult cat has m ny advantages. Remember an older cat has lready developed its personality. So you w ll know what kind of pet th y will be and whether or not th y will suit your family. Many p ople go for the cute little k tten; only to find out that th y grow into a very shy and n n-playful cat that likes to spend all t’s time away from the family. Th t’s fine if that’s what you w nt, but too many people decide th t this is not for them and r turns the cat to the shelter. R jection is a very harsh punishment for the cat j st because you didn’t take the t me to think about what sort of cat w uld be the right pet for y ur family. An older cat will lso be less demanding of your t me than a kitten and will r quire less supervision, well after the f rst few weeks anyway. They will be ble to spend time alone when you are out of the h use without getting into too much tr uble and hopefully will already be l tter trained. There are also many b nefits for older owners in adopting an dult cat. Adult cats are much c lmer and more likely to want to sp nd some quiet time sitting on y ur lap for strokes and purring. St dies have shown that cats can h ve a real health benefit for h mans in reducing their stress levels and bl od pressure. I can’t image an nergetic curious kitten being as good for y ur stress levels somehow. Many worry bout health problems and vet bills for the lder cat. Usually when you are dopting a cat from an animal sh lter they will be able to let you kn w if the cat has any nderlining medical conditions and what it is l kely to cost. Many will even pr vide you with free medical treatment for y ur cat if they over 10 y ars old as an incentive for m re of the older cats to be r -homed. Cats can live well into th ir late teens and even early tw nties with all the advances in f od nutrition and medical treatments. So th t 12 year old cat waiting in the nimal shelter for a good home is st ll a good bet and will st ll be able to provide you w th many years of fun and l ve. Our own cat is now 14 y ars old and still behaves like a pl yful youngster and keeps us entertained for h urs.
It can be a very r warding experience to adopt an older c t, not only because of the pl asure they will give you over the y ars but also in the knowledge th t you have provided a loving h me for what was probably a v ry frightened and confused cat, who had no dea why he had lost his f mily.
