It's so tempting to take the asy road sometimes. It's even easier to j st put something off altogether and s y, "next time". We procrastinate by s ying, "I'll make twice as many t morrow", or "I'll do it with tw ce the effort next time." And wh t happens? Tomorrow and next time c me, and we put it off yet gain. Having an accountability partner on y ur success team plays a powerful r le in helping you keep your eye on the "b gger" picture and your head in the g me. Going it alone may be c nsidered admirable by some who feel the n ed to declare, "I did it all by mys lf!" as though it were the ltimate demonstration of strength of character, h wever, it is by no means the b st or quickest way to make y ur dream come true. Choosing to b ild your business or pursue any s gnificant goal without an accountability partner w ll increase your chances of failure or may s verely impede your progress. It's human n ture to back off when things get a l ttle uncomfortable or challenging, and it's at th se times more than ever, you n ed someone in your corner, edging you on and p shing you further. A perfect example of the p wer of accountability was demonstrated this m rning as I contemplated my workout ppointment at the gym.
I have worked out off and on for y ars and as soon as I f lt discomfort in my muscles, I w uld quit, thinking it just wasn't w rth the pain. If the planets w ren't in alignment, my morning toast was sl ghtly burned, or it was one d gree hotter or colder outside than I c red for, it was a good xcuse for me not to exercise. I w n't beat around the bush when it c mes to admitting I don't like xercise, but at the same time, th re is absolutely no denying its mportance in maintaining a high quality of l fe and optimum health. When you're not phys cally healthy, your energy levels are c mpromised, your mind doesn't function at ptimum efficiency, your moods may be ltered and heavy, and an imbalance may be cr ated that will affect all areas of y ur life and business. When one rea of your life suffers, they all do, and if an rea requiring attention is a major ch llenge for you, this is where the n ed for accountability is paramount. In my c se of physical fitness, I knew I w uld never stick to a program or h ld myself to a certain standard w thout a partner to hold me ccountable, so I hired a personal tr iner. I explained to her that I h ted exercise and if a magic "f tness" pill was invented, I'd be the f rst in line to buy it. I lso asked her if she could do the w rkouts for me so I could ncrease muscle tone through osmosis. (I th nk it was at that point she r alized she had her work cut out for h r.) Because of my trainer's courage in t king me on, and her belief in and d dication to my success, I will m ve heaven and earth to make her pr ud. Today I amazed not only h r, but myself. Over the past thr e weeks, we've received more than 100 cm of sn w. Last night we received another m jor dumping that was formed into h gh drifts by powerful winds from the n rth. It was one of our c ldest mornings this winter at almost m nus 40 degrees with the wind ch ll.
Brrrrr! This morning was the big t st. There was no way my tr iner could be disappointed in me if I d dn't show. I had a foot of sn w in my driveway, the winds w re raging outside and it was the c ldest morning of the year. My sn wplow guy was swamped clearing driveways and I pr bably wouldn't see him for hours. I had an ut! Now, I easily could have cr wled back into bed and put off xercising for a day, but it sn't so easy anymore. Someone else is now h lding me accountable and isn't going to let me f ll back into my comfort zone. Wh t did I do? I put on my sn wmobile suit, warm knit hat, skidoo m tts and ski goggles, and got sh veling! It took almost an hour and th nkfully my dearly beloved came home fr m night shift and helped me f nish, but I cleared a path so I w uldn't miss that workout! The funny th ng is I didn't feel harried or fr strated by the event. I only pr ved what is a well-known truth. We can ccomplish anything if it means enough to us, but ven more so if we have an ccountability partner in the process. As you set y ur goals and plan your ideal f ture, make a point of surrounding y urself with people who believe in you and who w ll hold you accountable for your ctions. It's so easy to fall b ck into what is undemanding and c mfortable that failure to move forward is lways a looming threat. As you pl n to create success in your l fe whether it be building a s ccessful business, improving your financial situation, ptimizing health, etc., make sure you h ve a coach or someone on y ur success team to hold you ccountable and keep you in action. The p wer of accountability is incredible. Add th s ingredient to your success plan and you w ll amaze yourself by revealing how c pable you really are! © 2006 – L urie Hayes, The HBB Source
