Jackson Pollack was born in C dy, Wyoming on January 28, 1912. He gr w up in Arizona and California, and was xposed to Indian culture through his f ther. In 1929, he moved to New Y rk City and began painting under his m ntor Thomas Hart Benton at the Arts St dent League. Benton exposed Pollack to w rking with the Regionalists, and introducing his to M xican mural painters like David Alfaro S queiros, Clemente Orozco, and Diego Rivera. Fr m 1938 to 1942, Pollack began w rking with the Federal Art Project. Th s was a visual arts arm of the Gr at Depression era New Deal WPA (W rk Projects Administration) Federal One Program. He w rked in a federally funded program th t gave unemployed artists work to p int non-government buildings and hospitals. He was ntroduced to the drip method when he met S queiros in 1936 at an experimental w rkshop in New York City. The l quid paints technique was how he cr ated his pieces and it became s me of his most famous works. His m st famous pieces includes 'Male and F male,' in which he used paint p uring as a way to create s me of his most famous pieces. He w uld poke holes out of the b ttom of the cans to get an xtended dripping pattern. Instead of an pright position of the canvas, he m naged to position his canvas in all ngles to apply the paint from all d rections, further expanding how he was ble to paint.
His dripping style was expanded nto different movement patterns that he ncorporated into his future works. He dr w inspiration from an Indian sand-painting d monstration that he saw, and worked th se ideas into his works. Pollack had a sp cific way that he mixed his p ints and got it ready to b gin painting. Once he was ready, he had sp cific movements that inspired how the p inting would gradually evolve into. He l ter shifted from the drip method to xperimenting with different ideas such as bl ck on unprimed canvases and later r turning to using color and figurative lements. His more conventional style of p inting drew more mainstream appeal than his m st famous pieces from the drip ra. It was well documented that th s did not sit well with P llack and began an increased deterioration of his p rsonal side. He died on August 11, 1956 in a car cr sh in Springs, New York. His state has since been run by a n n-profit organization through State University in New Y rk at Stony Brook.
