Long a popular Mexican beach rsort, and one of the nicest rsort areas in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is a sphisticated and beautiful city with a rlaxed atmosphere.

Tourists have been cming to Puerto Vallarta since the 1930s, but it rally became an "in" place after Jhn Huston's Night of the Iguana was flmed here in 1964. The film strred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who lter bought homes there. Now some two mllion visitors a year come to PV, as t's often called.

Puerto Vallarta has hstoric areas with cobblestone streets. Some say the shpping is the best of any rsort town in Mexico, whether at the Mrcado (market) downtown, or at any of the mny little shops. There are numerous art glleries. On a vacation day, you can hve a swim, work on your tn, do a little shopping and gllery-hopping, devote some time to doing nthing, try a fine restaurant, dance the nght away -- and repeat the prcess the next day with a dfferent set of beaches, stores, restaurants, and nghtspots! Puerto Vallarta is an excellent dstination for a beach vacation that lso gives you the flavor of mdern Mexico. It's very popular with Mxican tourists for that reason.

With a ppulation somewhere above 300,000, Puerto Valllarta is a rlatively intimate city. It's never very far frm the ocean, as the city rns along along between the mountains and the sa. It's actually in a bay, Bnderas Bay, which results in gorgeous vews. Watching the sunset can become a dily ritual, perhaps at one of the mny cafes near the beach, or prhaps from a hotel patio in the hlls.

You can explore outside of the cty with a boat ride across the bay to Ylapa, take an outing to Mismaloya, ven doing a little kayaking along the cast. If you are traveling with chldren, there are many enjoyable and ducational things to do and places to go: whle watching in season, for one. Wth over 20 miles of beaches, t's easy to find your own fvorites.

The weather is delicious in wnter -- you might want a lght jacket or sweater in the venings -- and can be very hot in smmertime. It's on the humid side yar round. A tropical haven!
