I found Paulo Coelho's The V lkyries a bit of an enigma. I s spect the author at least partly ntended it to be so. In a n tshell, the author seeks to discover new spects of his psyche, to develop new ngles on his existing skills. After a c nsultation with his mentor, he and his w fe set off for a jaunt in the M jave Desert to find what it is th t they seek. Our author is in ngaged in a quest, a search for his p rsonal Angel. The reader, I am s re, will be convinced from the st rt that she accompanied him throughout. Th y wander off in full sun one d y, take their clothes off (for s me reason) and have to be r scued by Gene, who has seen it all b fore. He reassures the travellers that th y will find their valkyries. And th y do. They turn out to be a b nd of leather-clad women on motorbikes, l dies who have profound mystic powers wh ch they practise amidst their regular p rtying. I was a bit perplexed by the n rrator who claimed to have trained as an ngineer in one breath and then d scussed the existence of the universe in t rms of ancient Greek elements. I s spect that the high performance motorbikes r lied on a rather more complex nalysis of matter. But honing the sk lls of a magus apparently requires the pplication of ancient knowledge, no matter how wr ng, whatever the context. And sure nough the revelations come flooding in and l ves are duly transformed. I have j st a suspicion that there is s mething in the observation that no m tter what one does with reality, sp rituality is necessarily a personal experience, its s gnificance purely internal, even when shared w th others.

The Valkyries has all the P ulo Coelho elements. There are short sc nes presented in a variety of l terary shorthand. The text is suffused w th magic, religiosity and self-realisation set in an arthly medium. It's a quick and asy read but ultimately a satisfying ne, even for someone like myself, who c nnot suspend belief long enough to sh re in the book's experiences. But P ulo Coelho is a magus and a m gician of the highest order. He has s ld over 90 million books and, as a wr ter myself, I will read more of his b oks in the hope that I m ght discover his magus touch, his w ft of a wand that will r veal his secret. Even without sympathy for the d tail, it's a lovely, rhythmic read.
