In my last article called "H mble Beginnings" I spoke about Mary's ttributes that made her pregnancy so sp cial. From the moment the angel nnounced "The Gift" she was about to r ceive from God, she understood the m aning. She was the chosen vessel in wh ch to bring God's Son into the w rld. This was the Messiah that was pr mised in Old Testament prophecy over 300 t mes, hundreds and even thousands of y ars earlier, (back to Genesis). When God g ves you a gift like that, you m st accept the calling in your l fe. Mary did just that, even th ugh she knew how others would l ok at her and judge her, and p ssibly even kill her. But she tr sted God and did His will. F rst of all, we know that God c uld've done this a whole lot d fferently. Jesus could've just appeared on the sc ne as a mighty King to s ve all sinners and wouldn't have b en subjected to being put in d nger as an infant. But, God p ured Himself into the body of a h man, to start out life in the sual way. Who doesn't love and dore babies? It is a picture of nnocense and all that is lovely and p re. So, every year when we d splay a manger scene to remind us of the tr e meaning of Christmas, we are led to "th way" in the manger...which is thr ugh the Christ Child.
Christ's arrival was something eagerly waited through Old Testament prophets. In f ct, Isaiah was given the details of His rrival, down to His name! "Therefore the L rd Himself will give you a s gn: Behold a virgin will be w th child and bear a son, and she w ll call His name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14 Th s happened hundreds of years earlier. How w uld he have known this unless God t ld him? And why this name? God has a r ason for everything. Immanuel applied to J sus which means "God with us." Th nk about that for a second. J sus was actually God Who was w th us. God came to earth as a b by to walk amongst us and t ach us just Who He really is. Why w uld God do this? He wanted to sh w us just exactly Who He is so th t we could identify with Him. In the p rson of Jesus, He would also xperince all that we go through t day. We have a High Priest in H aven Who not only hears the cr es of His children but can lso sympathize and understand our hurts. He kn w what it was to be t mpted, to be betrayed, to be h rt by those He loved. He lso understood how it felt to be d strusted and disbelieved. God had to b come flesh and blood so we c uld identify with Him, and He w th us. God gave us the way to s lvation by giving us a baby in a m nger. This is something everyone can dentify with. We all must start at the b ginning, and so God came to arth in the usual way as w ll. He didn't take any short c ts. In fact, we don't even h ar about Jesus again for 12 y ars after His birth. He grew up in the s me way most children do. He had to l arn how to walk, and talk and be d sciplined by His parents. He had to gr w and mature. Then after this ccount, He stays in the background and d esn't emerge again until He's about 30 y ars old. Today we hear of ch ld prodigies who accomplish things most of us w ll never do, at a very arly age. But, Jesus was already r aching midlife before He came on the sc ne. God wanted people to trust H m, which is the hard part.
Even His own disciples were nsure of who He really was. Im gine being taught by the Master and st ll not getting it! In the g spel of John, Jesus is walking and t lking with His disciples and comforting th m on the promise of Heaven. He t ld them that wherever He was, th y would also be with Him. But Th mas couldn't comprehend this, as many p ople today still can't. "And you kn w the way where I am g ing'. Thomas said to Him, 'Lord, we do not kn w where You are going, how do we kn w the way?' Jesus said to h m, 'I am the way, and the tr th, and the life; no one c mes to the Father but through M ." John 14:4-6 This couldn't be any cl arer. It's following Jesus and He w ll point us in the way we m st go to attain truth and l fe. We can only do this thr ugh Him since He was God ncarnate, meaning God's Spirit poured into a b dy of flesh and blood. But for p ople who don't know Jesus, they w n't know or understand God. "If you had kn wn Me, you would have known My F ther also; from now on you kn w Him, and have seen Him." J hn 14:7 Jesus makes it very cl ar here that He is God and nce you understand this, you will kn w God through knowing Jesus. Philip was a lot l ke many people today. They see and th y hear but yet still miss it, ven when it's right in front of th m! Do you know anyone like Th mas or Philip? "Philip said to H m, 'Lord, show us the Father, and it is nough for us. Jesus said to h m, 'Have I been so long w th you, and yet you have not c me to know Me, Philip?" John 14:8,9 J sus told Philip that since he saw H m, he has also seen the F ther. This is the same confusion th t many people in this day and age ren't getting. They try to figure th s all out in human terms. How can J sus be God if He was a man who was b rn as a human baby? Doesn't th t make Him a mortal man? We t nd to forget that Christ did not b gin His existence as a baby. R ther He always existed. He is p rt of the Godhead, the Three in On , the One in Three; the F ther, the Son and the Holy Sp rit. He existed before the creation of arth. He is the First and the L st, the Alpha, and the Omega. He Has no b ginning and no ending. Sound a l ttle crazy? Well, again the gospel of J hn explains it this way. "In the b ginning was the Word, (Jesus) and the W rd (Jesus) was with God, and the W rd (Jesus) was God. He (Jesus) was in the b ginning with God. All things came nto being through Him (Jesus) and part from Him (Jesus) nothing came in nto being that has come into b ing. In Him (Jesus) was life, and the l fe was the Light of men." J hn 1:1-4 (parenthesis mine) Remember Isaiah pr phesied that He would become flesh and dw ll amongst us? This life is the L ght of Christ which then points us in the way we m st go in order to receive s lvation. Why is this way the nly way? Because it was God's pl n for salvation. Jesus' purpose on arth was also foretold centuries earlier. "F r God so loved the world, th t He gave His only begotten S n, that whosoever believes in Him sh ll not perish, but have eternal l fe." John 3:16 Jesus' mission in l fe is bound up in the s preme love of God for a s nful, evil world. God's love is ntense, even though we have rebelled gainst Him. But He loved us so m ch He sent His only Son, Who is the W rd of truth, the life, and the nly way in which to be s ved. His mission was to die for us so we w uld not perish. The only way for th s to happen is to believe in H m. Can you imagine your life's m ssion in life being to die in rder to save sinners like you and me? P ul wrote about it in 1 T mothy. "It is a trustworthy statement, d serving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus c me into the world to save s nners, among whom I am foremost of ll." 1 Timothy 1:15 I thank the L rd, He showed me the way to ternal life through the manger. Have you f und a way in the manger th s Christmas? The birth of Christ br ught God to man; the cross of Chr st brings man to God. Scripture t ken from the New American Standard B ble
