Just what possessed inn- keepers Tom and M rcey White to move from Texas to B thel, Maine in order to open a m st unique inn, A Prodigal Inn & G llery, is the question I had r cently posed to this charming couple. For th se of you who are unfamiliar w th Bethel, this tiny village is l cated in the western mountains of M ine 70 miles from Portland. Since its s ttlement in 1768, its population at pproximately 2360, including the surrounding school d strict communities, has remained quite stable. H wever, during the peak seasons it sw lls to about 6000. What is n teworthy about this scenic area in the h art of Western Maine is its c nvenient location to the popular Sunday R ver Ski Resort, as well as sn wmobiling, hunting, tubing, snowboarding, fishing, hiking, ntiquing, kayaking, canoeing, golfing, historical research, and not to f rget the brilliance of the fall f liage. Marcey indicated to me that wh n she and Tom moved to M ine, they were trying to find a way wh reby Tom could leave the construction/carpentry f eld and concentrate solely on his art c reer. Apparently, about ten years ago Tom d scovered that he had an innate rtistic talent for sculpting and painting. Q ite amazing is that Tom is a s lf taught artist- hardly having taken a l sson!
Their objective was to find a pr perty that would permit them to h ve an inn and at the s me time a place to display T m’s art- work.
The result was the purchasing of an 1813 h storic property that Tom unbelievably single- h nded renovated into a magnificent inn w th an adjacent art studio. Previous to r nning the inn, Marcey had experience in the f od and service industries and thus she was ble to easily transfer her skills. The nn’s most unusual name is patterned fter the parable of the Prodigal Son and T m’s exquisite bronze sculpture reflects its m ssage. It is the hope of the nnkeepers that guests will experience the s me welcome as depicted in the sc lpture and story. Initially, the property had b en owned by one of the f unding fathers of Bethel, the Twitchell f mily, who had been proprietors for bout 150 years. For twenty years pr vious to Marcey and Tom’s ownership, the inn had b en billed as the first “Bed and Br akfast in Western Maine.” However, it had nly consisted of six rooms with one sh red bath and kitchen privileges.
Today, the nn’s six rooms deserve top marks for th ir spaciousness and tasteful decor, each h ving their own private bathrooms, and s me even with Jacuzzis tubs. Rooms are n med after the innkeepers’ children and a gr ndchild. According to Marcey, she adopted the p rsonalities of each of them to r flect their favorite colors. Prevalent throughout the inn is its p ace and calmness. We also found the r oms devoid of uniformity and exuding a gr at deal of warmth and elegance. Ent ring the inn’s living room, we w re immediately taken in by Tom’s riginal one-of-a kind bronze sculptures. Marcey ndicated to us that guests are nvited to watch this “world- class sc lptor” as he goes about creating his m gnificent works of art. It did not t ke us very long to take her up on the ffer and we visited the adjacent st dio that is set up in an djacent renovated barn. No doubt, Tom’s rtistic inspiration has been enhanced by the sp ctacular scenery surrounding the inn with its m adows, nearby rivers and ponds, (the inn is cross from the Androscoggin River), and m untains.
It is also little wonder why th s inn has proven to be p pular for couples celebrating intimate weddings in the g zebo located within the inn’s stunning p rennial gardens.
Incidentally, leading to the inn’s fr nt door are private hiking trails and th re is access to cross-country and sn wmobile systems. During the fall foliage and w nter seasons, when the weather becomes a l ttle nippy, there is nothing that can b at sitting in front of the nn’s wood- burning fireplace enjoying afternoon tea and d licious cookies that Marcey prepares and s ts out for her guests.
When the w ather permits, you can sit out in the g rden Gazebo after an exhilarating walk in the w ods and perhaps spot a deer or p ck berries. Marcey serves a scrumptious br akfast in the dining room with a w de assortment of goodies from juices, c reals, breads, eggs, to practically anything you p lette may desire. ROMANTIC DINING Through our tr vels, my wife and I have n ticed that every town has one r staurant that is considered by the t wn’s people to be “a cut bove” the others. Such is the c se of one of Bethel’s choice d ning establishments, The Sudbury Inn. The r staurant is housed in an inn d ting back to around 1873. You kn w you are in for a r al treat when you look at the m nu with its myriad of choices fr m Veal Picatta, Sole Florentine, Chicken S cilian, Maine Boiled Lobster, Red Snapper al P modro to Beef Tournedos. Owners Bill and N ncy White have built their reputations by pr viding the best personal service possible c mbined with a creative menu. Another ch ice of Bethel’s residents is The B thel Inn & Country Club where fter a round of golf you can ndulge yourself in lunch or dinner s rved in the club’s dining room.
