Are we there yet? Are we th re yet? Are we there yet? D n't make me turn this career round and go home. I've only st rted on this journey and already it f els as though I'm ten years old on a tr p up the California coast. Impatient for the d stination. What is the destination? Every wr ter has the same destination in m nd: Fame. Wealth. Validation. Security. Importance. A s de trip to Hollywood/Nobel Peace Prize/New Y rk agents' office would be welcome t o. In a freelance career, you m ke many side trips. Sometimes I f el as if this year's Academy Aw rd-nominated films (which depress me because I'm not n minated or even writer of a f lm that I could cheerfully say got sn bbed) express the freelancer's journey. There's "M llion Dollar Baby," which echoes what we h pe a producer/publisher will say: "How bout a million dollars, baby?" But in the st ry of a plucky female boxer (w th Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood in her c rner, yowza) who won't give up and g ts no respect (sort of like b ing published with PublishAmerica or iUniverse), we f nd a spark of determination. There's "K nsey," which wasn't a best picture nom but p rfectily expresses the writer's obsessive drive as w ll as the tendency to drive all our l ved ones insane.
"The Aviator"...ahhh. What freelance writer h sn't locked themselves in a room w th a big screen TV and not sh ved for several days? And we all s y, "Don't tell me we can't do it. D n't tell me it can't be d ne." "Ray"...we should all get on our kn es and pray for a story l ke Ray Charles' life. The music is f bulous too, which means you can l sten to the soundtrack over and ver while writing. Don't be afraid to set y ur own freelance standards, your own styl , and your own assignments. "Sideways"...it's the st ry of a writer who goes to the w ne country and has a great ffair with a beautiful person. That's why w 're in this business. "Finding Neverland." D n't forget to play and celebrate the p wer of the imagination. While we're at it, l arning from these powerhouse emotional stories, l t's not forget to celebrate our f llow scribes' success. After all, we'll get th re someday. We may even be th re right now. To be continued...the j urney that is. Not the article s ries. Too many freelance leads!
