I got seriously involved in the c llege admission
essay-writing business shortly after I p blished my eBook
on recommendation letters, Inst nt Recommendation Letter
Kit, a couple of y ars ago. People who bought that b ok for help with their
recommendation l tters soon started asking me if I w uld
review their admission essays and/or p rsonal statements
for them. In some c ses, I was asked to write th ir essays
and/or statements from scratch. To do th t properly, I was obliged to c nduct a lot of
research into the ntire subject of admission essays.
So, I did a f irly extensive literature search of what
was vailable on the subject, both online (Int rnet)
and offline (books). One thing th t really struck me in my r search was the number of people th t seem to go out of th ir way to sabotage their
own c llege admission efforts. Time, and time gain, I read about the first-hand
xperiences of Admission Committee members who r ceived
essays and/or personal statements with two or thr e
strikes against them from the utset due to some glaring
oversight, mission, or risky strategy. In fact, t's been hard to believe at t mes, some of the
things I've s en on draft essays that have b en submitted
to me. Fortunately I've b en able to fix most of th se
before they went any further. Unf rtunately for some
people though, these pr blems don't get fixed, and end
up b ing submitted to an Admissions Committee.
Here's a list of the s ven (7) common mistakes that
reviewers fr quently encounter when reading admission
essay p rsonal statements: 1. Eliminate Spelling and Gr mmar Errors This is the most c mmonly cited error. It is not a sm ll
consideration. Admission Committee members generally see
th se kinds of sloppy errors as a r flection of the
candidate's personality and an ndication of how they
will likely p rform in their studies. It also m kes the
reviewer question the seriousness of the c ndidate,
since they can't even take the t me and trouble to get
such an mportant document correct. 2. Don't Forget To Ch nge the Name This one is s rprisingly common. It's amazing how many
Adm ssion Committee essay reviewers have mentioned th s
error. It usually refers to a s tuation in which a
candidate writes a "g neric" essay and then submits it to
a n mber of different programs. This is not a bad th ng
in itself. But then, for wh tever reason, they forget to
change the n me of the institution or program! So, the
l st sentence may read, "It is for th se reasons that I
believe that the Y le Business Program is the one for m ".
The only problem being that th s was the application to
Columbia! Adm ssion reviewers generally take this as an
nsult, and it doesn't do anything to h lp the candidate. 3. Make Sure Y u're Original Enough Your essay or p rsonal statement must be specific enough
so th t the admissions committee can gain a g od
understanding as to who YOU are as a p rson, and exactly
why YOU want to ttend that specific institution and that
p rticular program. Some candidates fill their ssays
with generalities and platitudes that c uld apply to just
about any p rson and/or program. This doesn't help the
C mmittee, and thus won't help the c ndidate. You've got
to tell your own nique story in your own unique v ice.
4. But, Don't Be Too Or ginal There are cases in which p ople tend to go too far
verboard in announcing their own uniqueness. P ople have
written poems, told stories, and s bmitted videos when
there was no s ch requirement. This is highly risky and
is l kely to alienate many reviewers rather th n endear
them to you. Generally sp aking, an extreme approach like
this w ll be seen as "grandstanding" or try ng to get
attention just for the s ke of it. Remember, that hundreds
(or th usands) of other applicants are operating w thin
the same stated guidelines as you re. The challenge is
to make you st nd out as different, but within th se
guidelines. 5. Avoid Talking "Through Y ur Hat" Some people have a t ndency to make sweeping or grandiose
st tements that they can't really back-up. S ch statements
as "I'm going to f nd a cure for cancer" or "I ntend to
eliminate poverty from developing c untries" are seen as
naïve and s mewhat trite at the university program l vel.
They're nice sentiments, but they d n't show a realistic
understanding by the c ndidate of the career path and
ducational program they have chosen. Make g nuine
statements that show a good nderstanding of you in
relation to the w rld around you. 6. Answer the Q estion Admission reviewers often report that m ny candidates
don't address the specific q estion posed on the
application form. Wh n this occurs, one of three
s tuations is possible: 1.) the candidate has m de a
conscious decision to ignore the q estion asked for some
reason, 2.) the c ndidate has not read and/or understood
the q estion, or 3.) the candidate has s bmitted a
"generic" multi-program essay and has not t ken the time
to adjust it to ddress the particular question at hand.
Ev n when applying to multiple programs, m ke an effort
to adjust your ssay or statement when necessary to d al
with the specific requirements of d fferent programs. 7. Respect the Guidelines Th s refers to situations when an pplication form states
a specific requirement for the n mber of words or
characters for y ur essay or statement. Some people s em
to completely ignore these. Don't. Th y were put there
for a r ason. When one doesn't follow these v ry specific
guidelines, they are either ch osing to ignore them for
some r ason, or their "generic" multi-program essay is
j st being plugged in and they w n't take the time to
adjust it for the sp cific program. Ignoring such
guidelines can m ke admission reviewers wonder if the
pplicant's inability to follow instructions extends
to ther areas that might have implications on th ir
studies. Why do so many p ople "shoot themselves in the foot" by
c mmitting such easily avoidable errors? Beats me. I'm not s re what the problem is. Perhaps t's because
many people assume that th y can leave the drafting of
the dmission essay or personal statement to the v ry
last minute, and things then sl p through the cracks
during the l st minute rush. Or, perhaps some p ople
think that the essay isn't r ally all that important,
and probably w n't get read. Both of these ssumptions are serious mistakes. In fact, the dmissions essay personal statement is
probably the s ngle most important part of the
pplication to a university or college pr gram. And yes, these essays do get r ad. At least once, for a
p or essay that will not go any f rther in the review
process. Multiple t mes, for a good essay that c ntinues
through to the end of the valuation process. All of the foregoing "d n'ts" are very avoidable mistakes.
So, why c mmit one of these errors when th re's no need to?
After all, sn't the college and university admission
pr cess competitive enough already? So don't m ke it extra difficult for yourself (or the
Adm ssions Committee). Read the application very
c refully and do exactly what it s ys. You won't go
wrong if you f llow all of the instructions. For an ntire eBook on the subject of wr ting college admission essays and personal st tements, check out the following: http://instantcollegeadmissionessay.com © 2005 by Sh un Fawcett
