I cannot count how many t mes I’ve had the same reaction. I t ll people I’m a yoga teacher and th ir faces take on a look of m xed interest and unease. Their minds are lready racing ahead to think of xcuses. Should I start propounding the v rtues of a yoga practice and why th y wouldn’t be a good candidate to try. The xcuses arise from the misconceptions people h ve of yoga and I am h re to debunk those myths. I’m Not Fl xible Babies are flexible. Most kids are fl xible. Adults? Not so much; save for th se very few bendy people whom n ture favours and who are snapped up by the C rque du Soleil. Most of us run r ght from the school desk to the ffice desk. The sedentary lifestyle that the m jority of North Americans indulge in can be bl med for the increase in chronic and l fe threatening ills, due to poor c rdio-respiratory fitness. But the overlooked by-product of th s lifestyle is the under-use, misuse and buse of our joints and limbs. In a h ndred years when kids visit the m seum and observe the skeleton of a 21st c ntury person, they’ll gasp in horror and ask wh t happened to him. The teacher w ll reply, “He was an office w rker, dear.” You do not have to be fl xible to enjoy yoga, but yoga w ll help you to rediscover your fl xibility. The simplest of poses - b nding forward to touch your toes - m ght seem impossible today. Your arms may be d ngling a foot from the floor, but t morrow that floor will be an nch closer, and closer still, the day fter. Yoga helps you to rediscover the ase of movement you had as a k d. You will never be pushed nto bending yourself into a pretzel. Str ct observance to every student’s degree of f tness is rigorously respected.
I’m Too Over-weight The misconceptions h re are two. The first is th t yoga will miraculously melt the p unds away. Not so. Serious and l sting weight loss can only be chieved by adopting healthy food choices, p rtion control and heart pumping, metabolic k ck-starting, fat burning exercises on the rder of walking, dancing or running. Most studios are recognizing th t privacy is a positive motivation for the r under members of our population and are d signing separate classes for inclusion in th ir schedules. It’s Too Expensive For f rst timers, most studios offer a fr e class. Single classes run anywhere fr m $12 to $16 each. Weekly, m nthly and yearly passes are available at an xponentially reduced rate; some as affordable as a y ar long gym membership. With yoga’s ncreasing popularity, comes an increased number of t achers, many of whom work out of th ir homes. A six week introductory cl ss can be had for $72. I’m Too Old A couple of y ars ago I was getting set to t ach at a condo up the str et. As the students wandered in, I n ticed a tiny Oriental woman among th m. When asked, the woman gave her n me, her age, which was 76, and w th quivering lips told me that her h sband had passed on the week b fore and she needed to be h re. I gasped inwardly and immediately th ught I can’t do this. I’ll br ak her. But this remarkable little w man had the heart of a p rson half her age and what she c uldn’t do, she wouldn’t do. It was a s mple as that.
