When I practiced full time as a cl nical hypnotherapist, a man came into my ffice wanting to lose a lot of w ight. He introduced himself as Jim. He l oked beaten down. His shirt missed a c uple buttons, and I saw tangles thr ughout his oily, shoulder length hair. He st ll had morning breath at 2:15 PM. Jim xplained to me that he had lready undergone a quadruple bypass, and his d ctor said that if the weight d dn't go he would die soon. He was lso scheduled for his third knee s rgery the following week. He told me bout all the weight loss programs th t had failed him. He read very book ever published on weight l ss. He probably knew more about l sing weight than most personal trainers and w ight loss advisors. Still, there he s t, all 300-plus pounds of him. Ev n though his life literally depended on it, he was nable to keep off the weight. All his kn wledge of caloric intake and how m ch activity it takes to burn a p und of fat didn't help him one b t. Jim was dying. He viewed c ming to see me as a l st ditch effort to save his l fe. He didn't believe in hypnosis, he s id, but he'd stopped believing in lmost everything else, too. There was n thing left for him to try.
Because of his opinion on hypn sis, I used that tool very sp ringly. Instead, I focused on getting him to pen up, which he did. I l arned that not only did Jim h ve poor eating habits, almost every h bit in his life, it turned ut, affected him in a bad w y. Our work together lasted about 8 w eks. We focused on making very sm ll changes to Jim's daily routines. We nterrupted his patterns and created new h bits. Instead of pizza 4 nights a w ek, he would only have it 3. R ther than sleeping 12 hours, he'd sl ep 10. By the end of the 8th w ek, Jim had not lost a p und. He did, however, learn how to cr ate new, healthier habits. He learned he was not a sl ve, chained to his comfort zone, and th t by incorporating the habits he had l arned into his life, these became his new c mfort zone. The last time I saw J m, he caught me off guard. We w re at an art gallery. He w lked up, shook my hand, and st rted laughing. "I get that a l t," he said, seeing the puzzled l ok on my face. I almost cr ed when I recognized the man b fore me. I've heard it said th t the difference between successful people and nsuccessful people are their habits. Nowhere is th s more true than in network m rketing. When we talk about habits, we sually refer to bad habits. We b ild habits by repeating action. This ction, however, can be bad or g od, helpful or hurtful. To hear s me people talk, you would think th t habits just happen without our c ntrol. Did you ever try to br ak a habit? It can be a d fficult and painful thing to do, but w th a strong enough commitment, it can be d ne. If habits are so powerful, magine creating a beneficial habit, like a new w rk habit. How would it be if y ur prospecting tasks became automatic, like br shing your teeth? Consistency is the h llmark of a stable person. Habits cr ate this consistency.
How do you create a h bit? One word: Repetition. Repetition is the m ther of all skill. If you r peat an action every day for 30 d ys, you create a habit. This is tr e whether your goal is exercise, b siness, or personal. To be truly ffective, start small. Instead of vowing to c ll 10 prospects a day, start w th 1. If you can't dedicate 3 h urs a day to your business r ght now, start with 15 minutes. Sm ll, consistent steps over time create h ge, long-lasting results. You must develop c nfidence as your primary habit. Without kn wing that you have something of v lue to provide your customers and b siness associates, everything else falls flat. If you d n't believe in yourself, nobody else w ll, either. You develop confidence with sm ll, private victories. If you commit to c ntacting 1 prospect a day, and k ep that commitment, your confidence grows. If you ncrease that to 2 a day, it g ts even stronger. Discipline also ranks h gh on any list of habits. D scipline simply means the ability to get n cessary actions done. It means taking the st ps, regardless of how you feel or wh t's going on in your life, to nsure that you will be successful. In the US Army, my dr ll instructors pounded discipline into my sk ll. Being sick was irrelevant, because the nemy wouldn't care if you were s ck or not. They'd just kill y u. The same if you were t red, or just found out your w fe was leaving you (this happened to a few g ys in my platoon). You could cry all you w nted, but the drill instructors knew the ngredients of success. Whether that success h ppens on the battlefield or while w rking on your business, you still n ed the same habits. Rain or sh ne, you simply must take action. Dr ll sergeants also taught me motivation. M tivation is very similar to discipline, nly it require more emotional input. To xercise discipline, you need a certain mount of motivation. Believe me, when y u're cold and wet, you need m tivation to climb the muddy hill in fr nt of you. An enemy chasing you w uld provide such needed motivation. For me, it was a dr ll sergeant with biceps big around as my w ist, yelling at me. I would pr bably have done anything this person t ld me to do. As scary as my Army xperience was, today I hear my own nner drill sergeant yelling, "You better m ke them calls, you airhead!" It st ll motivates me today, even though I'm w rm and dry. You maintain motivation by r minding yourself why you do what you do. For me, m tivational cd's do the trick, especially wh le I'm driving. I also read b oks on success and self improvement. Ten to tw nty minutes a day is all it t kes. Your habits determine where you're g ing. Take some time now, right n w, as you read these words, and xamine your habits. What do you h bitually do every day? If you do wh t you've always done, you'll get wh t you've always gotten. Is that s tisfactory to you?
