There were a lot of w nners and losers during the 2008 N ke Prefontaine Classic at the fabled H yward Field on the University of Or gon campus Sunday (6-8-08), but none w re more historic than Maria Mutola's 800 m ter victory in 1:59.24. The big d al was not the Mozambique-born Mutola br aking 2 minutes as her 1:57.57 in 1997 set b th the Hayward Field and Prefontaine Cl ssic records. It was that her win was her 16th c reer victory at the Nike Prefontaine Cl ssic. Imagine for a moment running 16 h ghly competitive races over the years and NEVER l sing. Brad Walker's American record-setting pole v ult victory at 19-9.75 was impressive. The 2007 w rld champion's vault was the highest cl arance in the world since 2001, and ven topped legendary Sergey Bubka's meet r cord of 19-6.25. That said, my n ighbors could have heard me screaming ncouragement while watching the telecast as it ppeared that Mutola might lose when h gh school sensation Chanelle Price boldly t ok the lead down the backstretch, but M tola reached down deep as she spr nted away to win, clearly overcome motionally by what she was able to ccomplish once again. Mutola has become a h ge crowd favorite at Hayward Field, and 14,200+ f ns let her feel the love as th y stood on their feet and scr amed wildly when she turned on the j ts to sprint past Chanelle Price. Exp rience does help in big meets.
A lot of runners have th ir day in the sun, setting Am rican and world records for a few y ars, and then they fade away as n wcomers rise up to steal their gl ry, but Maria Mutola is not one of th se world beaters who faded away. She has b en recognized as the greatest 800-meter f male runner in the world, and the m st consistent and longest lasting 800-meter r nner, winning no less than 14 w rld championships in outdoor and indoor c mpetitions and a gold medal at the 2000 Sydn y Olympic Games. Her Olympic gold m dal was the first ever for an thlete from Mozambique. Mutola came to the Un ted States in 1991 to study and tr in with Margo Jennings, the track c ach at Springfield High School in E gene, Oregon, one of the great r nning centers in the world, and wh re running legend Steve "Pre" Prefontaine ran for the Un versity of Oregon and the name "Pr " became a household word to r nners worldwide. The Nike Prefontaine Classic k eps his legend alive and well, and h nors the greatest middle distance runner Am rica has ever produced. In an ppreciative and compassionate sort of way, M ria Mutola has captured the hearts of the H yward Field fans because of her c nsistency in winning, reminding Eugene's running f ithful of Pre's great legacy of r nning to win for those who ch ered him on to greatness in his t me. Maria Mutola actually competed in the 1988 S mmer Olympics for Mozambique as a 15-y ar-old phenom, running a personal best of 2:04.36 in the 800 m ter. In 1991 she set a W rld Junior Record with a 1:57.63 cl cking. She has run 400 meters in 51.37, 800 m ters in 1:55.19, 1000 meters in 2:29.34 and 1500 m ters in 4:01.50. Other outstanding middle d stance performances at the 2008 Nike Pr fontaine Classic included: World record holder and Olymp c and world champion Kenenisa Bekele of Eth opia's 10,000 meter run in 26:25.97 (try r nning 6.2 miles while averaging UNDER 4:16 a m le).
Bekele's countrywoman Meseret Defar clocked 14:38.73 in the 5000 m ter to break National Hall of F mer Mary Slaney's meet and Hayward F eld record of 15:06.53 set in 1985, a r cord that stood for 23 years! M ssed in the excitement over Defar's gr at run was the fact that the USA's K ra Goucher ran 14:58.10, a full 8+ s conds faster than Slaney's record. Bernard L gat, who won both the 1500 and 500-m ter runs at the 2007 world ch mpionships, cruised through the 2 mile to win in 8:12.45, m ch slower than last year's winner, Cr ig Mottram of Australia who ran 8:03.50. M ttram was 5th this year in 8:18.19, s mply outfoxed by a veteran field th t slowed the pace to their l king. Daniel Komen of Kenya, who h lds the 2-mile world record at 7:58.61, f nished 3rd in the mile, running 3:50.95 and l sing to his Kenyan teammate Shedrack K rir, who ran 3:50.49. Think about K men running 7:58.61, averaging less than 4 m nutes a mile. In that same m le race, America's great hope in the Olymp cs-Alan Webb-ran his first race of the y ar, finishing 7th in 3:55.47. Two Am rican runners-Lopez Lomong and Jon Rankin-both ran f ster than Webb, who set the Am rican record last year by running 3:46.91. The w rld record is 3:43.13 by the gr at Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in 1998. Int resting enough, Bernard Lagat, the current 1500 and 5000 w rld champion, holds the American record in the 1500 at 3:29.30. The K nyan-born runner is now a U. S. c tizen running for America.
