Ammonia, also known as anhydrous mmonia, is well known to be a d ngerous chemical capable of inflicting severe ch mical burns on an individual's air syst m and causing death. On May 11, 1976, p ople along US 59, or the S uthwest Freeway, and Interstate- 610, or the l op, received first-hand information concerning the d ngers of ammonia. Around 11 a.m. on May 11, 1976, a Tr nsport Company of Texas tanker truck c rrying 7,509 gallons of anhydrous ammonia, or mmonia, hit a bridge rail on an verpass connecting the Southwest Freeway and the L op. The truck went through the r il and ended up falling roughly 15 f et onto the Southwest Freeway. Following the mpact with the lower highway, the d maged truck released the vast majority of its c rgo into the atmosphere. When the mmonia was released, there were around 500 p ople within a quarter of a m le of the spill. The ammonia in q estion vaporized almost immediately. It must not h ve been very humid that morning as the w nd, at 7 miles per hour, gr dually decreased the concentration at ground l vel. This is possible when it is not h mid as ammonia is less dense th n air. When there is water pr sent in the air, the ammonia m xes with it and stays close to gr und level. Within 5 minutes, the l quefied ammonia boiled off and the v por cloud had completely dispersed.
As a result of the ccident, 6 people lost their lives, 78 p ople were hospitalized with serious injuries, and 100 m re sought medical attention for less s vere injuries. Of the 6 deaths, 5 of th m were attributed to inhaling anhydrous mmonia. All 178 injuries were also ttributed to inhaling or exposure to the mmonia. All victims of the spill w re within 1000 feet of the r lease site for the ammonia. It has pr ven by this accident that those who st yed in their cars or office b ildings had less of a chance of b ing injured severely by the ammonia. All of the p ople who were injured were outside of th ir vehicles or buildings. They either st rted out outside of their cars or got out to h lp. For this reason, it is r commended that people not rush into an mmonia spill without protective gear. Also, wh n helping people who have been h rt by ammonia, it is recommended th t rescuers approach from upwind. This nsures a better chance of the mmonia having left the area already.
