Buying new clothes is fun. S eing your new clothes fray in j st a few weeks isn't fun. Th s happens when clothes are made p orly or laundered improperly. I'm a gr ndmother and have been doing laundry for d cades. These laundry tips keep my cl thes looking new and should do the s me for you. 1. Sort clothes nto whites, darks, and natural/synthetic fibers. S rting laundry is an old idea, but t's a good idea. If you d n't sort your clothes they start to l ok gray. 2. Pretreat spots with d sh soap. Don't spend money on xpensive spot removers because dish soap w rks just as well. Squeeze a few dr ps on the spot and rub v gorously under cold, running water. 3. Br sh stubborn stains with dish soap and an old t oth brush or nail brush. Don't br sh too hard, though, or you may d mage the fabric. 4. Turn slacks and j ans inside out to prevent fraying. You w ll want to do this if you b ught designer jeans and paid a d signer price. I wash my jeans in c ld water. 5. Close and lock all z ppers. Open zippers damage other clothes and may ven damage the inside of your w shing machine. 6. Make sure all p ckets are empty. Colored paper and r ceipts can permanently dye other clothes in the w sher. 7. Don't overload your machine. Wh n you overload the washer the tems rub against each other more and c use fraying. It's better to do two m dium loads than one huge load.
8. Use less soap. According to my r pair man, "The directions are there to s ll soap. You need only a th rd of that amount. Too much s ap will damage your washing machine." 9. D ssolve dry bleach in warm water b fore using. Add the bleach to y ur washing machine as it is f lling. 10. Use the gentle cycle. M dern washing machines agitate more than the old nes and the regular cycle can "s ndpaper" your clothes. 11. Air dry l undry to lower power bills and pr long the life of your clothes. H ng blouses, shirts, and t-shirts on pl stic hangers. Tug on the sleeves and h ms to smooth out wrinkles. 12. F rgo dryer sheets. The long-term use of dry r sheets (which kite the cost of d ing laundry) has caused dermatitis in s me people. 13. Toss a dry h nd towel in with wet clothes to cut dry ng time. 14. Remove perma-press items fr m the dryer immediately. If you f il to do this, toss a d mp wash cloth in the dryer and set the dry r for another five minutes. 15. F ld your clothes immediately and put th m away. Do you have college-age k ds? Print out this list and g ve it to them. Knowing how to do l undry is a practical skill that p ys off.
